The General Secretary of The Evangelical Alliance sets forth the distinctive features of the various Protestant denominations in Britain to-day, and gives an outline sketch of their historical development. Mr. Kirby holds the view that Britain’s greatness has to a large extent stemmed from her Protestant heritage, which earned for her the title “the people of the Book”, and as he assesses the contribution made by the different denominations the only bias is “ in the direction of the reformed faith, to which all the denominations concerned traditionally owe so much”.
Mr. Kirby provides a “ guide book” rather than an exhaustive study of the various churches, but Iris work is by no means superficial. Often as much space has been devoted to relatively small denominations, about which there is little other readily available literature, as to the larger and more influential bodies. Each denomination has its own particular witness, and makes its own valuable contribution to the Church as a whole: and it is only by looking a little more closely and objectively at the “ other members of the family” that Christians of all denominations can hope to understand each other better in the future. |
