Résumé : |
Dr. Bernard Ramm in this series of lectures seeks to make plain the nature and function of the Christian college today by discussing the works and teachings of five great teachers. The five teachers are: Augustine, whose influence upon Western Christian education is unequalled; Melanchthon, one of the key figures of the Reformation; John Henry Newman, the famous 19th century educator whose ideas remain very influential today; Abraham Kuyper, the Dutch statesman-educator whose vast learning and creativity gave new force to the teachings of Calvin; and the contemporary Sir Walter Moberly, who has, more than most Christian educators, clearly seen the problems of Christian higher education in the 20th century. The first two lectures lay the foundation for Christian higher education, and the last three wrestle with the modern problems.
Through a concise survey, then, of the practice and teachings of these men Dr. Ramm reviews the basic issues in Christian higher education today, helps to make the wisdom of the past available to us, and points the way to a more deeply Christian and relevant education for the 20th century student. What is set forth here will prove stimulating and helpful not only to all teachers in Christian colleges, whether church-related or independent, but also to all administrators and members of governing boards. |
