Résumé : |
During the nearly four centuries since Congregationalism began, historians on both sides of the Atlantic have dealt with its rich, unique history and its impact on western Christian civilization. For Americans Congregationalism is a cornerstone: a religious, philosophical, political, and moral force that has shaped this entire nation through the years, from the moment the Mayflower landed on the shores of the New World. Congregationalism, “The American Religion” and an integral part of Protestantism, has, more than any other Christian denomination, with the possible exception of the Baptist, stressed the right to autonomy of each local church. At the same time, it insists that the final seat of authority is in the Cross of the Forgiver and Redeemer, Jesus Christ.
Since every Congregationalist should be informed concerning the important facts of the history of his fellowship, the Commission on Publications of the National Association of Congregational Christian Churches commissioned the writing of this book. It is of significance that this history of American Congregationalism appeared at the time of the first International Congregational Fellowship meeting in England in July, 1977. |
