Résumé : |
"This is a history of Anabaptist-Mennonite life and thought from the sixteenth century to the present, written particularly for young adults. The progress of scholarly studies of Anabaptism during the past twenty-five years, and the growing unity among Mennonites around the world, seemed to call for a book which would describe in simple terms who the Mennonites are in' relation to their sixteenth-century fathers, and in relation to each other. It is intended to introduce students, church study groups, and others to the basic historical and doctrinal developments through four centuries' of Anabaptist and Mennonite efforts to be the faithful church."
In the first eight chapters the writers present a simple and straightforward summary of the background developments of the Anabaptist movement—its internal relationships and struggles, its relation to the other Reformation churches, and the basic outlines of its vision for church and society. Chapters 9-18 discuss the historical and contemporary experiences of the Anabaptist-Mennonites around the world, including a description of the events leading to the formation of the several Mennonite conferences. Chapters 20 and 21 assess the life of the Mennonites in the North American environment and the possibilities for a recovery of the sixteenth-century Anabaptist vision of Biblical Christianity This volume was prepared under the direction of the Institute of Mennonite Studies, which is a research agency of the Associated Mennonite Biblical Seminaries of Goshen and Elkhart. Indiana. The writers invited to participate in this work have carried on extensive research in Anabaptism for many years and are recognized scholars in the field. They have brought to these pages the reflections and insights of sound historical-theological scholarship and deep Christian concern. Bibliographical notes for further reading are included with each chapter |
