“Karl Barth is the great problem figure of contemporary theology. Conservatives mistrust him, suspecting that his neo-orthodoxy is somehow a cover for twisting truths that they hold vital and dear. Liberals raise their hats and look the other way… Yet there is probably no thinker today from whom more could be learnt, whether it Ire from his insights or from his mistakes.”
The aim of this study is neither to whitewash nor to condemn. Neither is it another attempt to map out Barth’s teaching in all its ramifications, or to contrast Barth’s neo-orthodoxy with the older orthodoxy to tell the reader which is the best buy. Rather, this hook is an attempt to get inside Barth’s mind; to see the main issues as he sees them; to try to brim; into critical focus Barth’s approach to the Christian message and to find out what can be learnt from it. |
