Résumé : |
“China is the touchstone of Christianity in the twentieth-century,” according to George Patterson. He asserts that if Christianity could survive and spread in Communist China, we would have a twentiethcentury parallel with the experiences of the first Christians.
In a dramatic style Mr. Patterson takes us behind the scenes and shows how the church in China came under the power of the Communist Party, the struggles involved as the Party increased its pressure, and the battles that are still raging. Communism in China has not succeeded either in eliminating a vital Christianity or in compelling all Christians to conform to the Party line. This is no ordinary book. The journalist’s trained eye and sensitive, probing mind brings into sharp focus the intensity of the tension and struggle as two conflicting ideologies vie for the minds and loyalties of millions of people. But, reading between the lines of Party statements, proclamations, and directives, one is struck by the fact that the “reactionaries” and “counterrevolutionaries” among the Christians are a force potent enough to frustrate and infuriate the Communists. And they seem to be increasing in numbers and activity. George Patterson is not content to relate and analyze what has happened, but he proposes ideas and strategy for the future. |
