Résumé : | This major new reference is the first comprehensive survey of contemporary Christianity in all its many versions, set in both its religious and secular contexts. The work of some 500 contributors from the academic, religious, and professional worlds, the World Christian Encyclopedia is designed to meet the needs of students and teachers, researchers and reporters, pastors and church workers, officials and planners. The contemporary Christian world is extremely complex, with some 1.4 billion believers in 223 nations. Fully international in scope, the Encyclopedia systematically describes, in fourteen sections, the extent, status, and characteristics of the Christian religion, its 150 major ecclesiastical traditions and 20,800 distinct denominations, as well as their dioceses, jurisdictions, missions, assemblies, and fellowships. The work treats Christianity in the context of all the great world religions and the so-called “new religions,” as well as atheism, agnosticism, secularism, and Marxism. |
