This monograph results from a series of group discussions between men and women concerned with religious education. When the Education Department of the British Council of Churches invited Mr Colin Alves to investigate the working of the religious provisions of the 1944 Acts in maintained secondary schools, it asked for help in ascertaining the views of Evangelicals on the problems under discussion. An ad hoc group was therefore brought together, representing nobody but themselves. There were head teachers, RE specialists, college of education lecturers, staff workers with school Christian societies and workers concerned with churchbased Christian education. They came from the main types of maintained primary and secondary schools and from Anglican primary schools, and included almost as great a variety of denominational loyalty as of educational experience.
The material which as a result of these discussions was made available to the British Council of Churches Education Department is now published in this form to encourage all concerned to join in the current debate about religious education. It will be of particular interest, of course, to those who are facing the problem of how and what to teach in the ‘ Scripture lesson*. General principles and ideas are one thing. The practicalities of the classroom are another. |
