Résumé : |
This is a scholarly discussion of the entire field of education, with special emphasis placed upon the part played by the Christian church. It is a record of the dramatic events involved in the development of our present system of Christian education.
Dr. Eavey is a specialist in his subject, having devoted many years to the teaching of Christian education. His book fills a long-recognized need, providing educators, seminaries and colleges with an important text. It also makes available to all those active in the field a source of instruction and inspiration. After treating the primitive Oriental and Jewish systems of education, the author traces the growth of learning through early Christianity as applied by the apostles and later by the church fathers; its degeneracy in the Roman church through the Middle Ages; the inevitable Reformation; and the post-Reformation years. History of Christian Education then turns to America and the Sunday School —“the forerunner of all later activities in the field.” Several chapters are devoted to these later activities— organizations established for religious education such as Protestant day schools, Bible institutes, vacation Bible schools, weekday church schools, young people’s societies, and extra-church activities such as camps and conferences. Says Dr. Eavey: “Humanly speaking, the greatest need of the kingdom of God on earth through all history has been, as it is today, the need for trained leadership.” For this reason the concluding section of History of Christian Education is devoted to the program of teacher training. |
