Résumé : |
This book appeals to the churches to turn their serious attention to the “now irreversible” process of European unification, and decide what kind of Europe they want, and their own role and way of being the church in the Europe of tomorrow.
Beginning with a brief survey of European integration and its structures to date, as well as of recent developments in Central and Eastern Europe, Karel Blei compares the position of Roman Catholic institutions with those of several Dutch Protestant thinkers, and concludes that while the former’s appreciation of European unification is based on their perception of its Christian foundations, the latter express “a reserved, critical attitude based either on conservative or more progressive considerations”. In general, however, he considers that the Protestant churches have shown remarkably little interest in Europe, perhaps because of their basically national character. In attempting to determine whether a “European identity” actually exists, Blei highlights Europe's shifting geographical boundaries and its multidimensional history. To the vision of a continent shaped by its Graeco-Roman-Christian heritage, he opposes the notion of Europe as a “whirlpool of interacting opposites”. Addressing the question “What kind of Europe do we want?", Blei urges the churches to view secularization as a challenge, and opts for the vision of a “more human" rather than a “rechristened” continent. |
