"A Theology oj Church Growth" is the result of years of classroom lectures on missionary methods, principles of church growth, and crosscultural evangelism. In outline form the material has also been discussed with missionaries and national pastors at numerous work-conferences in various parts of the world.
This book is not a polemic that seeks to interact with the various publications on the subject or the several schools that are advocating their specific theories. Quotations and references are held at a minimum. Neither is this an apologetic to defend church growth and multiplication. Dr. Peters takes this for granted. The author’s approach is principally scriptural. He sets forth what he believes to be a biblical framework for defining strategic and operating principles for church growth. While at first he draws on the whole Bible, he focusses later on the Book of Acts. Research in social anthropology and social psychology has greatly enriched the whole field of mission operations. Church growth is a lively subject today and deserves our attention. It is Dr. Peters’ hope that his presentation can make some contribution to the growth of the church of Jesus Christ around the globe. |
