Old testament Commentary Survey is the evangelical consumer’s handbook for building an Old Testament library.
Willem A. VanGemeren, chairman of the Old Testament Department at Reformed Theological Seminary, appreciates the approach: “Longman evaluates the commentaries in terms of their purpose, audience, and use. The comments are lucid, sometimes even witty. The author is balanced in his criticism. ... Above all, Longman consistently affirms the Reformation commitment to sola Scriptura, the Reformed commitment to the Old Testament as an important part of tota Scriptura, and the evangelical commitment to inerrancy and infallibility.” In addition to commentaries the author reviews introductions, surveys, theologies, dictionaries, translations, and computer software. Each entry is graded—receiving between a low of one star and a highly recommended five-star rating. Longman also advises those trying to wring the most from a low book budget and offers his views on what an ideal Old Testament library would include. Old Testament Commentary Survey is a companion volume to D. A. Carson’s New Testament Commentary Survey. This second edition reviews resources that have appeared since 1991. |
