| Résumé : |
When early in 1924 it was decided thaï a hymnbook should be prepared for Ihe Universal Christian Conference on Life and Work the undersigned Emil Liedgren was requested lo gather appropriate hymns from Ihe Church in sundry ages and languages. That collection numbered about a hundred hymns. After long discussion, many changes and revisions we finally selected sixty.
More than a year ago, we wrote lo Mr. Charles Wharton Storck in Philadelphia, who with his well-known mastfiry has bestowed upon some Swedish church hymns citizenship in the English language. Next we mention Mademoiselle Renée Philippe and Pastor Georg KempfL If we had enjoyed their help earlier, it woidd have saved us an amount of correspondence, amendments and revisions. We also owe thanks for good translations and for assistance in different ways to Professor Carl Meinhof, Rev. James Dunk, Biskop Hogneslad, Frit Siri Dahlquist, Fr, Alice Troschke-Mensing, Miss E. Scott, Miss Smith-Dampier, Dr. Th. Mann, Pastor P. Blessing Dahle, Rev. H. M. Williams, Kyrkoherde Th. Tiedje. Dr. W. Scott, KanslirSdet A. Mohn, Pastor Nils Steen, Pastor Th. Arvidson, Dr. Eyvind Berggrav, Prof. Fr. Paasche, Kyrkoherde E. Ohly, Biskop J. A. Eklund, Prof. E. Linderhohn, Prof. Fr. Heiler etc. The Dutch Envoy in Stockholm kindly procured us scholarly information about text and history of two Dutch hymns. Especially we express our gratitude to the editors of the well-known collections of Hymns: Laudemus, Collection of hymns for World’s Conferences, published by the World’s Committee of Young Men’s Christian Associations and Cantate Domino, World’s Student Christian Federation hymnal, and others, who have granted to us the gracious permission lo reproduce translations of several Church Hymns. Amongst Church Hymnals we mention two, which are less known than they deserve: Laurent Arnell, Livre de Cantiques, Stockholm 1734, and the Hymnal of Ihe Evangelical-Lutheran Augustana Synod in North America (Auguslana Book Concern 1899). We are indebted to the Swedish Church in America for Ihe very valuable extracts that we have been allowed to borrow from that Hymnal. Our chief object has been to find such hymns that live in the hearts of the singing Communions of several languages. We have also had the intention of making our Brethren in other Christian Communions acquainted with some of the beloved hymns of Ihe Church in Ihe North. Although much work has been given to this task during Ihe lust year we regret the imperfection of the collection. We see that a superior and still more representative hymnal could be made if we had more time lo spend on it. Và sterâs, Upsala and Stockholm August 1925. |
