Résumé : |
Every day a dozen different philosophies of life parade before us—in the newspaper, on television, in magazines and books. Rarely do any of them conform to Christian ideas or ideals. Our culture is not only pluralistic but pagan and post-Christian as well.
What are Christians to do? Wall themselves inside their Christian communities? Or face the confused array of beliefs straight on, discover their roots, see the truths they reflect and those they skirt, and then respond with compassion and understanding? The choice is obvious. The question is how to do all this. This book is a place to start. Nancy Barcus does not present a systematic philosophy or a pocket formula for combating secular thinking. Rather she encourages openness to other thought systems without suggesting that we embrace them. After a discussion of key spokesmen for science, nature and humanism, she concludes by considering the rewards and the pain of facing these contemporary challenges. “God made us thinking creatures,” she writes. He wants us “to seek hard after understanding and insight, to endure the pain of the quest and to expect light in the morning.” |
