The twentieth-century Christian ... is compelled to develop for himself a working relationship between Christianity and philosophy that will discredit neither Christianity nor philosophy. Basic to this task is an understanding of the nature of the two enterprises involved. All too often the repudiation of philosophy, whether by significant writers or by popular Christian sentiment, stems from a failure to appreciate what philosophers are actually trying to do. With similar frequency the rationalistic rejection or compromise of the faith stems from a failure to appreciate the full intent and broad relevance of Christianity.
What follows is, then, an attempt to introduce and in a sense to explore the historic problem of reason and revelation in its contemporary setting, by trying to understand the nature of philosophy and Christianity respectively. In its brief compass it can do no more; it can hope to be suggestive, but neither exhaustive nor conclusive. |
