The message of the forgiveness of sins is at once central to Christianity and offensive to modern man.
"The forgiveness of sins is indeed one of the main foci from which to contemplate the whole panorama of Christian truth,” writes the author. “In the experience of forgiveness there unite all the grand themes of divine revelation which systematic theology elaborates under its various headings. Around this truth every other foundational truth of the gospel may conveniently be grouped.” And the author relates forgiveness to a number of these basic doctrines: revelation, Christ, grace, justification, guilt, experience, and atonement. The introductory chapter acknowledges that “it is precisely this message of the forgiveness of sins which sounds hollow to modern ears,” and then discusses what the moral man does not see, the necessity of forgiveness, and what the philosophical man eschews, the possibility of forgiveness. The author organizes the discussion of each topic clearly. In the chapter on revelation, for example, he shows that the idea of forgiveness is derived not from nature or conscience, but from special reve-lation-both the Old Testament and the New. For another example, he shows justification’s threefold relationship to righteousness, law, and good works. This feature recommends Forgiveness and Atonement to the initiate in theology, as does the author’s clear and readable style of writing. Numerous references to modern theologians and authors, all documented, help the reader to relate his faith to intellectual cross-currents of the twentieth century. |
