PREFACE
Preparing a guidebook to any country is a demanding task; writing one about Israel, with its marked contrasts and obvious contradictions is particularly challenging. Yet works of this nature continue to appear in such number that it would seem there is neither room nor need for new guidebooks to Israel. Unfortunately, however, many of these works do not achieve their aims. Compiled without any sound criteria, many are simply dry catalogues of monuments and names and convey but little to the visitor who is either not specialized in certain studies or is hard pressed for time. During my many years of professional guiding in Israel, I have often noticed tourists in my groups taking notes and writing diaries of their trips as we went along. A few of these persisted with their writing, but more often than not, they abandoned their notes after a few hours or at most after a day or two. It was for those visitors to Israel that I first prepared my summarized itineraries and brief descriptions of the foutes actually travelled, including Biblical references to the places visited. I set out originally to provide visitors to Israel not with a guidebook but with a travel and study butline which they could fill in themselves with the able and imaginative assistance of my friends and colleagues, the tour guides of Israel. In recent editions of Our Visit to Israel, however, I have expanded the text greatly and have added to it a large collection of colour photographs and maps for both the arm-chair explorers of Israel, who study it from afar, and the hurried visitors to Israel, who may wish to recall their experiences in this country when they are far away. This publication has become for me an all encompassing labour of love, continuously fed by the many letters which are sent to me from people the world over. Some of the writers I have had the pleasure and privilege of meeting and showing them through my eyes the wonders of this country. I am particularly indebted to the many thousands who have read my books and those who have inundated me with letters of appreciation. For this reason I have taken the liberty of printing a small selection of them. Throughout my career as a guide in Israel and during the writing of this book, I have attempted to share with those I have guided and with my readers some of the love and enthusiasm I have for this my native land. This book is dedicated to those who, like me, delight in exploring and discovering Israel, for it is indeed, “a good land, a land of... fountains and depths that spring out of valleys and hills... a land of olive oil and honey.” |
