JERICHO, the "city of palm trass, the rich oasis in the plain of the Jordan Valley, is the oldest occupied site In the country. It was the first city In Canaan to fall to the Israelites under Joshua, after its "walls came tumbling down".
QUMRAN, the ruins of the settlement of the sect of Essenes, where the famous Dead Sea Scrolls ware found in 1947, are on a hill overlooking the north-western shore of the Dead Sea. These important manuscripts ware discovered in ancient caves on the forbidding cliffs. MASADA, the mighty bastion overlooking the southwest shore of the Dead Sea. was one of the last stands for independence made by the Jews against the Romans. Its fall in 73 A.D., after a long siege, marked the end of that Independence until 1948. SODOM, which in its earlier existence symbolized vice. Is on the southern shore of the Dead See. In its fiery destruction. Sodom became the symbol of the standard judgement on sin, much quoted by the prophets of old in thunderous warning to the people to mend their ways. THE DEAD SEA is in the middle of a great geological fault known as the Great Rift. The rift’s sunken zone lies in the Dead See, a pit whose surface is 1.292 feet below sea level— the lowest sheet of water In the world. |
