The dramatic rise to power of Hailé Selassié, first as the regent Tafari Makonnen, then as negus (king), and finally as emperor, is the main story of Mrs. Sandford’s book. His numerous reforms from 1930 onwards are described, though they were cut short by the Italian invasion. A chapter details the emperor’s life in exile during the Italian occupation. The story then shifts to the lightning campaign of British Empire troops, supported by Ethiopian patriots, which liberated the country from Fascist domination. The emperor is then restored to the throne, engaged with his British advisers in the reconstruction of his country.
The author, wife of Brigadier D. A. Sandford, who led the patriot troops, offers another perspective. She and her husband spent about thirteen years farming near the capital, Addis Ababa. She returned to Ethiopia in 1942 and currently resides there. It is from personal experience that she writes about the country’s natural features, vegetation, people, customs, agriculture, and social life. She also provides insights into the Ethiopian Christian Church, the various races and religions represented in the Ethiopian empire, and the country’s Parliament. The book discusses the people’s eagerness for education, their aspirations for the future, and the growth of national sentiment. There is no more realistic and up-to-date account of Ethiopia, that ancient country of mystery. |
