The theme of the historical Jesus is one of the most important in New Testament scholarship. This volume attempts to survey modern discussion, to delineate its most significant aspects, and to attempt a careful appraisal of it. 'Although,' says the author, 'I have tried to write for as wide an audience as possible, I have tried to keep in mind the needs of the student and tackle the problem as rigorously as possible '
The book falls into two sections. The first looks at the general problem of what is meant by the historical Jesus ; here we are concerned with the questions that arise in the study of any figure from the past and especially with those that arise when the figure in question is the object of religious veneration. The second examines how we can study the historical Jesus and whether we can do so successfully. This book, therefore, is not a historical study of Jesus ; rather it contains the preliminaries to such a study 'At a time when some people doubt the possibility of knowing more than a tiny modicum of facts about Jesus, even this preliminary task is of great importance, and it certainly demands a book to itself,’ writes I Howard Marshall. 'It is arguable that too many lives of Jesus are produced by persons who have not worked out a proper scientific method for the purpose. If this book manages a firm foundation, it will have accomplished an adequate task.' |
