John Charles Ryle, Bishop of Liverpool from 1880 to 1900, was one of the ablest Evangelical leaders and writers of his day. C. H. Spurgeon considered him ‘the best man in the Church of England’. It is good that after half a century of neglect his books are now being rediscovered and reprinted, and the reappearance of Practical Religion is specially welcome.
This book is what it professes to be—a manual on the practice of Christianity. It seems to me to be one of the best there is. It is a companion volume to Ryle’s better-known classic, Holiness, and the contents of the two books are complementary. One has to go back to the Puritans to find the great central themes of the Christian life expounded with such depth, realism and searching power. It is a cause for profound thankfulness that both volumes are now available again. The book has been slightly shortened for this reprint. Two chapters which added nothing new have been left out, and a few paragraphs and sentences which strike the modern reader as quaint and curious rather than instructive have been deleted also. Most of what Ryle wrote, however, is as fresh and timely to-day as it was when it first appeared, eighty years ago. - J. I. Packer. |
