the second book by the author of the now famous Iron Gates Yield, is an unusually moving book of devotional studies.
The meditations of which it is composed begin with those with which the author occupied his mind and fortified his spirit during the terrible months of his imprisonment in China. Thus, these earlier meditations take their rise from prison conditions. The narrow cramping cell - but how much less cramping than the human form and life into which God entered at the Incarnation ! The anguish and humiliation he suffered daily - how fully understood by Christ who had drained the cup of suffering to the dregs ! The need for extra vigilance when his captors approached him in friendly guise recalled the temptations of Christ and the ceaseless conflict with evil. The daily need for readiness to face the death with which his captors threatened him led to a spiritual resurrection, a willingness to accept the perfect will of God without any alloy of self. The meditations then turn back to the path by which he had reached the hour of testing and crisis - the call to missionary work he had felt as a boy and which was remarkably confirmed in later life; experiences in China which deepened his certainty of the Gospel; the littleness of his achievement, and the recognition that he must surrender his most precious thought, “my work”, to be fit for the perfect will of God, as Abraham was prepared to sacrifice Isaac. After release he was faced with the strain inseparable from a return to normality. Here again he proved the all-sufficiency of God’s grace, sustaining, guiding, blessing him through wider opportunities of service, and through the joys of marriage and parenthood. The meditations thus spring from individual need, from deeply tested faith which was strongly confirmed in experience, and they reach out from individual need and experience to the universality of Christian truth and love. The author uses the Scriptures with remarkable facility and power for instruction and illustration. He writes with compelling force and no small literary grace. Here is a tremendously real book. The meditations are searching. They sometimes seem almost too intense, but one cannot escape their reality. They embody the deepest convictions of a man who passed through the furnace and found he was not alone. |
