Many of the great theological terms used by the apostles in their interpretation of the significance of the death of Christ are used today in a way which suggests that they have come to mean different things to different people. If we could discover what was the exact significance of these characteristic Christian expressions for the early Church much uncertainty and ambiguity at present attaching to the use of these terms would be removed.
The Apostolic Preaching of the Cross is an attempt to understand what exactly was in the apostles’ minds when they used words such as ‘redeem’, ‘covenant’, ‘propitiate’, ‘reconcile’ and ‘justify’. In the first place Dr. Morris studies these great themes against the background of the relevant Old Testament passages, for here we have one of the major influences on the thinking of our New Testament writers. In addition he takes into account the flood of light thrown on the meaning of the everyday speech of the people, which is the language of the New Testament, by modern study of papyri and inscriptions. A third source of help is found in ancient Jewish literature since in these Rabbinic writings a terminology similar to that used by the apostles is often found. Having completed this initial consideration of the background material, the author then goes on to examine these great doctrinal words in their own New Testament setting. The result is a most rewarding study of one of Scripture’s major themes. |
