PREFACE TO THE AMERICAN EDITION.
The following simple chapters call for no introduction in detail. Their kind and their purpose will be seen at a glance. I have taken, week by week, some short utterance of the Holy Book ; have done my best to “ stand still and listen ” to it, as to a voice through the written Word from the Living Word ; and have endeavored to report to my reader what I have heard for myself. The chapters are intended for reading on the Lord’s Day, thus helping to bring together those two great blessings of Heaven, the Sunday and the Bible. In our day not only the world but the Church, too often, is allowing her clasp upon both those gifts to slacken to her own deepest loss. If this book, such as it is, help its readers ever so little, to prize both more, thankful shall I be thus to serve the Church and the Lord. - Handley C. G. Moule. |
