‘A Family Prayers' reading shouldn’t last longer than it takes the eggs to boil for breakfast!’ That was the comment passed when we first discussed issuing this series. While we don’t advise you to use these readings as an egg-timer—you might get them hard-boiled, or sometimes a little watery—we do suggest that Family Prayers enables you to share together in a brief but thoroughly worthwhile period of Bible reading and worship.
Breakfast-time may be the least convenient part of the day for you to get together as a family unit to worship God. But if you can find time, perhaps in the evening, to meet God as a family, you will discover them to be minutes well spent. Family Prayers' readers vary immensely; some have young families, some teenagers, some have no family at all! Obviously one faces considerable difficulties when preparing readings which can involve little ones, teenagers and adults. You will find therefore that, from time to time, a reading is aimed more towards one group than another. However, it is our aim, as far as is possible, to involve the whole family. Just a word about using this volume. First of all, we suggest that you obtain a modern translation, version or paraphrase of the Bible or New Testament—Today’s English Version, The Living Bible, The Revised Standard Version or The New English Bible, to mention a few. Then read the Bible passage, e.g. that for January 1 is 1 Samuel chapter 1, verses 1 to 8. From these verses the author has selected one particular verse on which to base her comment ; this is printed in bold type at the head of the note. Then follows the ‘Comment’ with its accompanying ‘Thought’, ‘Question’, ‘Discussion Point’, etc. A brief prayer completes the act of worship. All the writers of Family Prayers 1973 are mothers. Besides being busy housewives and writers, some of them manage to work as well! That is a masculine assessment of the situation! Accordingly, the notes reflect a fair cross-section of life, and if the feminine touch is sometimes evident, the male viewpoint is not neglected—the editor is a father! - Paul W. Marsh, Editor |
