| Résumé : |
These Morning Reflections are thoughts suggested to the writer’s mind, not altogether by, but whilst reading through in course, in early morning hours, Matthew Henry’s Commentary on the Old Testament Scriptures, a book of incalculable value.
His habit has, for some years, been, whilst reading, to underline with a pencil any remarks of the Commentator that strike him, and to make pencil notes in the margin, of any original thoughts of his own, whether relating or not to the chapter read. To then scribble out the whole of them on a scrap of paper, and later in the day to fair copy them. This may explain why the paragraphs are rather in the form of aphorisms than of studied sentences ;—why they are so discursive and disconnected. They might have been re-arranged on some methodized or systematic plan, but on the whole it is concluded that they will better serve the purpose for which they are printed, if left in their original order. The purpose for which they are printed is two-fold, viz,, so far as the writer is concerned, to act as a make-weight to a non-retentive memory ; and, so far as any who may read them is concerned, to tempt them, if so it might be, in some such way, themselves to read, mark, learn and inwardly digest the Word of God. |
