Résumé : |
Anthropology for Christian Witness serves as a thorough, basic introduction to the study of anthropology that has been designed specifically for those who plan careers in mission or cross-cultural ministry. The work of Charles H. Kraft, author of the classic Christianity in Culture, and widely acknowledged as one of the foremost Evangelical missionary anthropologists, this new work represents the synthesis of a lifetime of teaching and study. Kraft treats the very basics, including theories of culture and society; an assessment of the various anthropological schools; kinship and family structure, and cross-cultural communication.
Since his work is oriented to the work of mission, Kraft is concerned throughout to relate his study to the Evangelical creed of Christianity. The study of anthropology helps to free the missioner from enthnocentric biases, but in Kraft’s view the Gospel provides a point of view from which to critique a culture as well. In his words, “Anthropologists have taught us a great deal about the need to take everyone's culture seriously. As committed Christians we need to combine this insight with something we could not learn from them: the fact that God desires to use human cultures to interact with His creatures, to change their allegiances, their perspectives and their behavior in the direction of His ideals. Our commitment to Christ requires that we see culture as context and instrument rather than as an end in itself.” |
