By Mark’s day the message of Jesus Christ had already reached most of the countries around the Mediterranean Sea. But what the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus really meant had by no means been fully explained. Mark, in his explanation, created a new literary form—the “Gospel.”
Eduard Schweizer’s commentary on this Gospel is one of the celebrated German series Das Neue Testament Deutsch. Designed primarily for ministers and seminary students, it combines faith with scholarship. Dr. Schweizer pays special attention to the way Mark chooses and arranges his materials and to Mark’s use of transitional verses, parenthetical remarks, and short summaries. The particular message that Mark is trying to express will be found mainly in this framework, says Dr. Schweizer. Separate excursuses deal with the Kingdom of God, the Messianic secret, the parables, the miracle stories, the trial of Jesus, the Easter appearances, and ten other topics. This translation is the first major work to utilize Good News for Modern Man, The New Testament in Today’s English Version. |
