Résumé : |
This is without doubt the most important book about Jesus to have been written in the last century. Despite its now considerable age, the questions it raises have yet to be answered adequately, and the approach it adopts can be extended to the study of the lives of Jesus written since 1900. Even Schweitzer's positive conclusions about the nature of Jesus' ministry are now recognized to be much more telling than was originally supposed.
Those coming to the book for the first time will discover a brilliant survey of attempts by 19th century writers, including great names like D.F. Strauss and Renan, to discover Jesus as he really was behind the theological portrait given in the Gospels. Time and again, Schweitzer shows how what each new writer is doing is creating Jesus in his own image, projecting on to Jesus, often quite ianppropriately, his won hopes and feras. Schweitzer's own conclusion is to see Jesus as a man dominated by an expectation of an imminent end to the world. |
