This guide to the interpretation of the Bible for those who want to analyse the methods of biblical criticism in a way which takes nothing for granted has proved extremely popular, and the authors are concerned that it should continue to be a useful and up-to-date study. So for this second edition they have added two new chapters, rewritten a number of sections which they felt had not been originally clear enough, and updated all the bibliographies.
After explaining why biblical interpretation has become a specialized discipline, the authors briefly trace its history. They then explain textual criticism, historical criticism, grammatical criticism, literary criticism, form criticism, tradition criticism and redaction criticism in such a way that the reader can see that these are merely logical developments of what he or she is already used to doing in other contexts, rather than esoteric and difficult techniques. The two new chapters are on canonical criticism and structuralism. Final chapters show the positive results of all this work in a variety of settings. |
