Résumé : |
Robert L. Dabney (1820-98), who was for forty years Professor in Union Seminary, Virginia, U.S.A., was in the opinion of Dr Archibald Alexander, 'the best teacher of theology in the United States, if not in the world’. Living in an age when America possessed outstanding teachers of evangelical Christianity in such men as Charles Hodge, J. H. Thornwell and W. G. T. Shedd, Dabney was second to none as an exponent of the theology which these leaders held in common.
‘A man of extraordinary gifts of perception and analysis, of logic combined with warmth and moral sensitivity’, writes Professor Albert H. Freundt, Jr. of the Reformed Theological Seminary, Jackson, Mississippi, ‘Dabney championed the doctrines of Calvinism and applied them consistently and practically to the great issues of his times. In Dabney one senses a firm conviction of truth and duty. He was absolutely certain that the day would come when the divinely revealed truth which he held and taught would be also divinely vindicated. ’ This third volume contains further material from the four volume set first compiled by Dabney’s friend C. R. Vaughan. It includes Dabney’s treatment of issues in society which are of perennial concern to the Church of Christ, including Anti-Christian Science, Secularized Education, Strikes and the influence of Roman Catholicism. A number of biographical sketches of great Christians whom Dabney knew also appear, including one of General T. J. (‘Stonewall’) Jackson, to whom Dabney had been Adjutant-General during the Civil War. |
