Résumé : |
The Myth of God Incarnate was first presented to the public through a press conference which has been compared with the famous meeting at Oxford of the British Association for the Advancement of Science in 1860, when Huxley and Bishop Wilberforce clashed over Darwin’s evolutionary theories. Its editor aptly compared the collection of papers with Essays and Reviews published that same year, which was ferociously attacked as a wicked undermining of the Christian faith; its seven authors were described as ‘Seven against Christ’ and there was an attempt«in the court to defrock those of them who were Anglican clergymen.
Reactions to The Myth of God Incarnate were violent, but by no means unanimously hostile; interest in it was intense. The first impression was sold out on publication day and a substantial reprint followed soon afterwards. This sixth impression brings the total number of copies in print to 32,000. The book is important for two reasons, neither of which was fully developed in the initial controversy. First, it is a study of the nature of the language of Christian doctrine, concerned to explore the meaning of the words which Christians repeat in the creeds and the language of worship. Secondly, it raises the question of the relationship of Christianity to the other great religions of the world, a question which has had all too little discussion in our contemporary multi-racial society. The Myth of God Incarnate is not itself a dogmatic work; it points to problems and suggests directions in which answers may be found. It is not a manifesto demanding acceptance, but an urgent invitation to the kind of thought that is needed if Christianity is to retain its intellectual integrity in the world of today and tomorrow. |
