Minister and layman alike will receive herein a well-rounded knowledge of the concepts contained in the Greek words set forth. For each word the classical Greek meaning, that of the Koine or Greek of the common people, and the New Testament Greek are presented, and then treated as they relate to the context in the New Testament, New lines of spiritual truth are thus high-lighted.
In the words of Archbishop Trench, “Sure disappointment awaits him who thinks to possess the whole without first possessing the parts of which the whole is composed.” Hence the import of word study. This book in no way requires a basic knowledge of Greek, though students of that language will find it a great aid. The content and meaning of the words in the Bible are not determined by each individual expositor, for then what is right today may be wrong tomorrow. This does not undervaluate the power of the Holy Spirit to reveal new facets of the same truth according to individual need. The concordance with each word enables the reader to obtain definite light on these passages. It is very common to use a modern connotation for a word which did not exist at the time of the translation, and thus throw the meaning into confusion. Some examples of this are the words: conversation, Heil, Temple. The English language is inexact, the Greek, more explicit. Translators found themselves obliged to use the only existing English word for three or four found in Greek, bearing different shades of meaning. The words chosen are key words. With these as tools we can unearth much buried treasure which the unenlightened reader may miss. Such “gold-diggers” will be amply rewarded in their research. |
