This book brings together ten papers by different authors on the cult of saints. Six have been translated from the French, including a pioneering study (first published in 1913) by Robert Hertz. Hertz was one of Durkheim’s most eminent pupils, and his important study now appears in English for the first time. Most of the papers deal with Christian cults from the earliest times to the present, but studies of the ‘martyrs’ of the French Revolution and of saints in Islam also figure in the collection. The approaches of the authors are from different academic disciplines and the aim of the book is to provide an interdisciplinary or multi-disciplinary focus on a crucial but relatively neglected mode of religious practice.
The editor provides a framework for discussion of these and other aspects of the cults in a wide-ranging general and historical introduction, and the book is also provided with a full annotated bibliography covering material on the subject in all disciplines and in four main languages. |
