Résumé : |
The concept of “secular humanism” has become the ultimate villain in today’s Christian dialogue. The view that man’s choices should be based not so much on what is right, but upon what is expedient or self-fulfilling, is the philosophy of our day—one that Christians are right to be alarmed about. But in our reaction against this twisted thinking, we tend to lose sight of a biblical view of humanity. We lose the appreciation God intends us to have of man created in His image.
Psalm 8 gives a humanistic answer to David’s question, “What is man?” Not humanistic in the secular sense, but humanistic in its presentation of man as a wonderful creation of God. Ron Allen’s aim is to help us reaffirm the biblical dignity of man in an age of confusion about his being. Using Psalm 8 as his foundational text, he teaches us to answer the ques¬tion “What is man?” with the strong affirmative: Man is majestic! As male and female, man reflects the wonder of the creator, whose image man bears. And in Jesus Christ, the epitome of true humanity, God’s majesty was reflected on earth. Only in our identification with the full humanity of the Savior may we be truly human, and only in being fully human may we fully appreciate the things man has done that are good and noble. We who know the Savior ought to celebrate our humanity as the means God has given us to glorify him in the earth he has made. |
