Résumé : |
Here is a comprehensive and scholarly introduction to the theology of the New Testament. Written primarily as a textbook (the first American effort in its field in nearly seventy years) for seminary students, this sound, conservative study chronicles the history of the discipline, states the problems encountered in its pursuit, and offers some positive solutions to those problems.
Ladd defines biblical theology as "the descriptive discipline that sets forth the message of the books of the Bible in their historical setting." Thus he prefers an approach to biblical history that highlights the richness of New Testament proclamation. A Theology of the New Testament focuses on the teachings of God in the synoptic Gospels, eternal life in the Gospel of John, justification and life in Christ in the epistles of Paul, the heavenly high priest in Hebrews, and the worthy Lamb who was slain in Revelation. All these, writes Ladd, express in various ways the one redemptive act of God in Christ. A helpful "Literature" section appears at the beginning of each chapter, noting important contributions to the subject discussed in the chapter. Most of these bibliographic references are to works available in English and thus accessible to every student. A Theology of the New Testament is well grounded in the conservative-evangelical tradition, but remains open-minded and constantly in touch with the opinions of other theologians. Reflecting a lifetime of scholarship, it will remain definitive in its field for years to come. |
