In recent years there has been a huge increase in archaeological and historical work on the Iron Age kingdoms of Edom and Moab in southern Jordan. New evidence has challenged old assumptions, particularly for the early Iron Age when these kingdoms were developing.
This volume focuses on the archaeological, textual and literary sources for the period between the 13th and 7th centuries BC in Edom and Moab. The major theme running through the 16 papers is primary evidence, its often uncertain basis, and the consequent difficulties of interpreting the nature, extent, precise date and historical implications of early Iron Age settlement in Edom and Moab. The volume provides an important and up-to-date summary of present knowledge of the early Iron Age in southern Jordan, and makes explicit recommendations for further research. Although the Transjordanian Iron Age kingdoms are often regarded as having arisen under similar circumstances, the archaeological and histoneal sources reflect a difference between Edom and Moab in terms of the rate and nature of their development. |
