| Résumé : |
It seems that modern Christian theology has tried everything to make itself relevant to the world around it. It has tried social protest, sampled pop psychologies, championed a bewildering array of liberations from sexual to political. And for all its frenetic dissipation of energy in search of "creativity," it now finds itself as exhausted and confused as the world it purports to serve and which in fact needs a meaningful vision of the transcendent more than ever.
There is, however, a solution. According to Thomas Oden, the answer lies not in deeper accommodation to modern fads. Quite simply, he asserts with verve and finesse that it is time for theologians to come home—to the Christian language, symbolism, teaching, and witness that sustained the Church for the first thousand years of its existence and which still sustain the body of the faithful today. Rather than impart their latest theological theory from the Olympian heights of a university chair, theologians must begin to listen again to the deep resonances of the Christian tradition. Oden's Agenda for Theology includes a range of items that have traditionally been elemental in the life of the Church but are neglected by modern theologians. These include a recovery of the notion that there are Christian doctrines to be defined, an understanding of Christ as the vital center around which all belief must turn, and a rediscovery of the post-Pauline Epistles and their enduring value. Above all, Oden asserts, theologians need to understand that their role is not to attempt to create new forms of faith, but rather to reappropriate the classical Christian tradition in the language and symbols of our time. Agenda for Theology excavates these neglected treasures and shows how they can yield new life to the Church. It speaks with understanding and forthrightness to all Christians concerned about the future of the Church. And it boldly sets forth the proposition that the best way to confront that future is to bring with us the timeless wisdom afforded by the past. |
