John Charles Ryle (1816-1900), most famously known as the first Anglican bishop of Liverpool, was a man whose spiritual knowledge could scarcely be found today. A student of Scripture and a man of prayer, he came to know God intimately. He was described as having a commanding presence, and vigorous in advocating his principles, albeit with a warm disposition.
In this work, "Holiness," like all his other writings, his style is simple, bold and direct, cutting quickly to the heart of a matter. It is this commitment to speaking the truth plainly that has distinguished his writings, and shown them to have lasting power, even to distant centuries. |
