What beliefs define an evangelical?
What do ‘evangelicals’ believe that ‘liberals’ feel they cannot? Why so often, is there such divergence between these two streams of Christianity? In Essentials David Edwards, a prominent liberal Anglican, engages in dialogue with John Stott, a leading evangelical and also an Anglican. Basing himself mainly on John Stott’s written work David Edwards looks at the main points of convergence, difference and misunderstanding — and Dr. Stott responds with equal care. The main subjects examined are the ‘infallibility’ or ‘inerrancy’ of Scripture; the meaning of the cross, miracles, and in particular the virgin birth and the resurrection; the use of the Bible in social ethics; the future of humanity and the concept of judgement; and finally the essence of the Gospel for today. At the heart of most of the discussion lies the crucial question of authority for what we believe and teach. Can the Bible be normative today? Is our culture to judge Scripture, or Scripture to judge our culture? What is essential in the message that sinful men and women can be reconciled to God? As David Edwards and John Stott agree in certain areas and disagree in others, the reader is constantly aware of his or her need to form an opinion and, more importantly, to enter into a new realisation of the graciousness and love of God. |
