The Gospel of Mark appeals to active people. Of the four gospel accounts Mark relates especially to men and women on the go. The book is full of action. More than forty times Mark uses an adverb translated variously as “straightway,” “forthwith,” or “immediately.” Many narratives are connected with “and,” as if Mark hardly had time to pause.
To further give credence to this thought, the Gospel of Mark contains no genealogy and very little discourse. The teachings of Jesus generally rise out of His activity. During His ministry Jesus performed thirty-five recorded miracles, and Mark describes eighteen of these. Mark clearly pictures Jesus as God for we have the accounts where the Father bore witness of that fact at His baptism and transfiguration, and the demons also attested to it. Jesus claimed it Himself and the centurion recognized it. But we are also attracted to the humanness of Jesus as He appears in the Gospel of Mark. Jesus was not merely concerned with issues of theology but He was also moved with compassion or pity when He observed the physical needs of people and did something about them. The Lord Jesus Christ came to serve. |
