Résumé : |
This book explores a Christian vision of freedom set against a backdrop of rising polarisation, division and competing views of what makes for good social and personal liberties. What kind of freedom do we need in the modern world? How can Christian visions of freedom engage with contrasting ideologies and traditions? Graham Tomlin, Bishop of Kensington, President of St Mellitus College and the author of Looking Through the Cross, unpacks these notions and explores why freedom is something to be learnt, not assumed, and is better understood as a gift rather than a right.
Tomlin begins with an accessible intellectual history of the concept of freedom, providing an overview of the principle of liberty in Western culture, on both sides of the Atlantic. He gives an account of some key thinkers on freedom: John Locke, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, John Stuart Mill and more recent figures who offer alternative perspectives. He then explores how Christian theology offers a distinct and paradoxically refreshing idea of freedom, through the eyes of St Paul, St Augustine, Anselm, Thomas Aquinas and Martin Luther. At the conclusion of this engaging, readable and deeply considered book, Tomlin sets out the arguments and the tensions behind human rights and personal freedom before proposing a Christian notion of freedom that will enable us to flourish: freedom found in the ties that bind us to others and to God. |
