Résumé : |
What is happening in Islam is of concern to more than Muslims. Nor is it all in the headlines or with the politicians. The Qur’an is the prime possession of Muslims, the Scripture of their origin and definition. How, then, are they reading and understanding their sacred Book today?
Answer cannot be easily had. For the Islamic faith reaches across three continents and comprises one seventh of mankind. Selection, then, has to be severe. It settles here on eight writers in the last half-century, from India, Egypt, Iran and Senegal. Their way with the Qur’an indicates how some in Islam respond to pressures in life and thought, associated in the West with thinkers such as Kierkegaard, Marx, Camus, Kafka, Jung, Fanon and De Chardin. Orthodoxy and revolution, personal religion and social justice, inspire varied approaches to the text and authority of the Qur’an. The Pen and the Faith opens eight windows into the mental mosque, into the internal debate between Muslim and Muslim and the interaction of Islam with other faiths. The author, who lectured on these thinkers in Muslim India in late 1983, writes from a long academic and practical concern for Islam and its Scripture. |
