James Black’s classic book on preaching was first published in 1924 and has remained ever since a standard work greatly valued by ministers and theological students. Originally delivered as a series of lectures to college students, the book covers the many facets of preaching from choice of subject, through the actual hard work involved in careful preparation, to the importance of delivery. The final chapters are devoted to the planning of worship and the conducting of services. As the title implies, preaching is not merely the art of following prescribed rules. There is always an element of mystery, which is bound up ultimately with the greater mystery of personality. Throughout these lectures, James Black has combined a reverence for individuality with a wealth of sound, practical advice. |
