Résumé : |
Many Christians relegate the Old Testament to an inferior position. Dr. van Ruler here questions that tendency on the part of the church and attempts to explicate a Christian approach to this neglected part of the canon. The Old Testament, he claims, must not be considered inferior to the New; indeed, the Christian church cannot do without the Old Testament.
Van Ruler is particularly disturbed by the contention that the rites and piety of the cult of the Old Testament are abolished by the teachings of Jesus. He suggests that if the cross of Jesus is a sacrifice — and he contends it is — then all that which the Old Testament has said about the atoning and substitutionary value of the sacrifices takes on a new meaning, essential to the accurate interpretation of the Old Testament. Not to listen to the Old Testament is to expose oneself to replacing the action of the living God in history with abstract concepts. The author raises such weighty themes as the status of Israel today, the unity of the testaments, the function of Jesus Christ within the Trinity, and the idea of the sanctification of the earth, a theme too often lost or spiritualized in Christian circles. |
