This book is the report of the most recent world consultation of national councils of churches. The meeting, the first such in 15 years, brought together 120 persons from some 70 of the world’s national councils and regional ecumenical bodies.
Critical issues were in focus: the councils as agents of mission, service and dialogue; their involvement in issues of today; their funding and independence; their ecclesiological significance, relation to their member churches, and role within the ecumenical movement. Included are texts of the major presentations and responses, reports of the five workshops, ecclesiological reflections on councils, a vivid account of the issues and dynamics of the meeting itself, and important, newly-revised reference material on councils around the world. Councils of churches are among the most widespread and important forms of ecumenism. This book is indispensable for all concerned with their significance and role today. |
