Résumé : |
With this volume, evangelical Christianity’s leading scholar and spokesman Dr. Carl F.H. Henry concludes his towering exposition of the Bible’s place and relevancy in the modern milieu.
“Unless the study of biblical theology finds its rightful preeminence among the priorities of modern learning,” he writes, “there will be no authentic rescue or salvation for modern society.” Out of this conviction, Dr. Henry asserts the indispensable role of a supernatural God in this last volume of his monumental series on God, Revelation, and Authority. Ironically, he notes, the widespread dismissal of the supernatural in our technological age has invited the emergence of demonic “religions” such as Naziism and communism. Dr. Henry evaluates current alternatives to the biblical view of God, including existentialism, process theology and humanism. He shows that none of these can compensate for loss of the biblical God, a loving Father who is both above his creation and at work within it. Describing this major contribution to evangelical scholarship, Dr. Henry writes, “Volumes I through IV in this series have concentrated on God Who Speaks and Shows; the fifth and sixth con¬cluding volumes concern God Who Stands and Stays. Earlier writings focused mainly on religious epistemology, that is, on the problem of knowledge and the fact of divine revelation as the answer to the question of how we know God. These later volumes emphasize ontology or metaphysics; they probe the nature of the self-disclosing God whom man may know and worship and serve. Such examination is the very lifeline of theological inquiry. God’s existence is the foundational biblical doctrine; from it flow all other Christian principles and precepts.” The serious Bible student, who has general knowledge of modern philosophical terms and biblical theology, will be able to read this volume easily. Even the layman who has limited background in these areas can glean useful information from these well-researched pages. Whatever one’s theological stance, Dr. Henry’ forthright approach, which calls for decision, must be reckoned with. He summons Christians to align themselves behind the scripturally revealed authority of almighty God. Short of this commitment modern theology remains warped and defiant. There can be no hopeful grafting of revealed theology to modern liberal scholarship. The evangelical community has long awaited this scholarly work that presents the case for revealed theology with philosophical and literary power. While modern man is adrift from the solid moorings of the biblical heritage, Dr. Carl Henry is one writer who finds hope in a God who will vindicate those who seek to serve him — even in the extremities of these tumultuous last days of the twentieth century. |
