When Alexander Solzhenitsyn visited London for the first time in March 1976 he appeared on BBC Television’s programme ‘Panorama’ in an interview with Michael Charlton, and he also recorded a radio talk for the BBC on Radio 3.
He spoke of his early admiration for the West, and his fears of its weakness in the face of growing Russian strength. The two programmes provoked a widespread public reaction that still continues and which has varied from heartfelt agreement to angry protest. Now, for the many people who were moved and impressed by Alexander Solzhenitsyn’s message, both interview and talk appear in printed form. |
