Harry Blamires defines the subject of this book with a characteristically blunt question: In what ways is the Christian message contaminated by the intellectual temper of the civilization in which it is now preached? In our age, Blamires contends, the Church is facing an entirely new challenge — the threat of a secularist, materialist ideology which is disentangling the Church's roots in the life of prayer, worship, and evangelism.
This classic analysis, first published in Great Britain in 1956, is Blamires' fullest exploration of the phenomenon of secularism and the threat it presents to the Church. As Blamires has observed since the secularist heresy has lost none of its energy. Past conflicts in the Church tended to concern doctrinal differences. Today they are between those who would direct the Church to purely temporal ends and those who are rooted in the supernatural realities of the life of faith. |
