Résumé : |
This book is essential reading for all serious students of the New Testament. Professor A. T. Hanson provides what has, for some time, been urgently needed: an up-to-date scholarly account of the use and interpretation of the Old Testament in the New Testament. The New Testament writers brought to their work the conviction that Jesus Christ was the centre of Scripture, this Scripture being the Old Testament texts. They were all making use in various ways, some old, some new, of traditional Jewish exegesis.
Professor Hanson starts with a description of this tradition and goes on to a consideration of Jesus' understanding of the Old Testament. He then examines the New Testament writings methodically: Paul, the Synoptics, the Deutero-Pauline writings and the Epistle to the Hebrews, John, the Pastoral and Catholic Epistles, and finally the unique exegesis of the Old Testament found in the Book of Revelation. It is clear that whilst the New Testament writers had much in common, their Old Testament exegesis differs significantly from one writer to another. The style of interpretation and its conclusions pose problems for scholars and Christians today. Professor Hanson considers these questions in his final three chapters, arguing that the fundamental convictions are the same but that techniques have changed radically. |
